Key Words and Phrases
P.M.I.- Post Mortem Interval- The amount of time that passes since the death of an individual. When the time of death is not known, the interval is possibly estimated to approximate a time of death.
N.A.M.u.s.- National Missing and Unidentified Person's System- This system is available to anyone, not just to law enforcement.
CODIS- Combined DNA Index System- The national United States DNA Database created and maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. CODIS consists of three levels of information; Local DNA Index Systems (LDIS) where DNA profiles originate, State DNA Index Systems (SDIS) which allows for laboratories within states to share information, and the National DNA Index System (NDIS) which allows states to compare DNA information with one another.
The Doe Network- a nonprofit organization that works with law enforcement, to connect families back with their missing loved ones that have been classified as John or Jane Does with no past indication on their identity.
Cause of death- an official determination of the conditions resulting in a human's death.
Manner of death- circumstances surrounding a person's death.
Grooming- The action of attempting to form a relationship with a child or young person, with the intention of sexually assaulting them or inducing them to commit an illegal act such as selling drugs joining a terrorist organization.

Genetic Genealogy- use of genealogical DNA tests, i.e., DNA profiling and DNA testing, in combination with traditional genealogical methods, to infer genetic relationships between individuals.
Polygraph- lie detector. It records several physiological processes (such as pulse rate, blood pressure, respiration, and perspiration) in humans when they are questioned to see if they are telling the truth.
Voice Stress Test/ Analysis- and computer voice stress analysis are collectively a pseudoscientific technology that aims to infer deception from stress measured in the voice.
Rigor mortis- also known as post- mortem rigidity It is a process where the body starts hardening after death. It is the 4th stage of death mainly due to calcium.
Victimology- a branch of criminology that scientifically studies the relationship between an injured party and an offender. It examines the causes and the nature of the consequent suffering. Victimology is the study of victimization, including the psychological effects on victims, the relationship between victims and offenders, the interactions between victims and the criminal justice system, and the connections between victims and other social groups and institutions. Victimologists use the scientific method to answer questions about victims.
Victim blaming- occurs when the victim of a crime or any wrongful act is held entirely or partially at fault for the harm that befell them.
Victim's advocate-trained to support victims or crime. They offer emotional support, victim's rights information, help in finding needed resources and assistance in filling out crime victim related forms. Our advocates frequently accompany victims and their families.
Missing Person's Advocate- according to the National Missing Persons Advocacy Association: Their goal is to provide education and training to adults and children on ways to avoid human trafficking and keep youth safe. They work closely with families to assist them in navigating the system during a critical moment when a loved one is reported missing.
Code Adam- is a missing- child safety program in the United States and Canada, originally created by Walmart retail stores in 1994. This type of alert is generally regarded as having been named in memory of Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of John Walsh (The host of America's Most Wanted and who serves on the board of directors for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children).
Websleuths- an internet community that is focused on crime and missing persons.
Uncovered- an online database that works with the community to solve missing persons cold-cases.
The Charley Project- a civilian database comprised of Missing people, physical descriptions of these missing people, clothing and vehicle descriptions, and circumstances of their disappearances.
Law and Crime Network- a T.V. station, YouTube channel, and website that includes news of court cases, criminal cases, and the like. The spokes people are typically Lawyers, legal correspondents, legal analysts, and anchors.
Buccal Swab- a cotton swab that is used to collect DNA samples. It is typically rubbed on the inner cheek to obtain skin cells.
Automatic fingerprint comparison system- a computerized storage system that collects fingerprints and compares them against known and unknown fingerprints in the system.
